We must be in touch to live our true destiny.” – Bernie Siegel MD

Many of our Camp Challenge Campers who are cancer patients will tell you that aside from their loved ones, when they are touched, it is often for treatment – needles, machines, radiation, chemotherapy, etc. Perhaps that’s why Camp Challenge’s Day Spa is such hit! Spa Director Cheryl Small Robinson (that’s her and her fabulous hubby, Dave, in the photo) and a small army of massage therapists, manicurists, aestheticians, and stylists pamper our campers with endless TLC. Cheryl , Dave, and the rest of the spa staff transform a building at Walker Creek Ranch into a beautiful, magical, spiritual sanctuary where campers’ bodies and minds are pampered with treatments of their choice.

A study that examined the effects of therapeutic massage on cancer pain found that massage therapy reduced pain perception by an average of 60%, decreased anxiety by 24% and enhanced relaxation by 58%. Plus it feels really, really good!

When she is not volunteering her time and amazing skills with the Me-One Foundation, Cheryl Small Robinson runs the Comfort Zone Massage and Wellness Center in Roseville at 426 Folsom Road. (916-773-2444)

Once the beans are roasted they’re packaged and shipped out that same day – now that’s about as fresh as coffee can get! And Scott’s Coffee House has soooo many delicious types, brands, and flavors of coffee to choose from.

As if a top of the line quality product wasn’t enough, they take 10% of your order and give it to one of four deserving charities, and one of those charities is – yep - The Me-One Foundation!! Check out their website at www.scottscoffehouse.com and go the link called “A Life in Every Cup”. (You can also get to their website from ours under “Ways to Give”).

As Scott’s Coffee House puts it, “You won’t find another coffee house like ours. Come in, sit with friends, and stir your soul.”

This beautoful venue is blessed with diverse habitat and an abundance of wildlife. There are over 20 miles of hiking trails on the Ranch property. Ambitious hikers might even try a four mile round trip hike to the top of Walker Peak, where they can enjoy stunning views of Tomales Bay and Point Reyes National Seashore. There’s Turtle Pond, for swimming and/or canoeing and there’s the Ranch Garden, which produces delicious organic vegetables year round, some of which are used in the delicious meals served by the staff.

Walker Creek is the perfect backdrop for the magic that the Me-One staff, and especially our campers, bring together for a weekend that creates memories and friendships that last a lifetime.

The Me-One Foundation is blessed to have the support of two of the most talented musicians around. Matt and Mike Pinder came to our first Camp Challenge to play some music as a welcome to campers as they pulled in the first evening. The next year, they called and asked if they could come to camp for the entire time and entertain our guests – score a big one for Me-One!

As their website puts it, “The Pinder Brothers tie the harmony vocals of Crosby, Stills and Nash together with the songwriting style of Simon & Garfunkel, and ultimately put their own modern spin on everything in the end.“ Classic rock fans may recognize the boys’ last name from their famous dad, Michael Pinder, a founding member of the legendary Moody Blues. Well, the apples didn’t fall far from the tree – the Pinder Brothers talent was recently recognized when their song, “Hang On Tight,” was awarded 1st Runner Up in the UK Songwriting Contest under the Indie/Rock category, and was also a finalist in the Pop category.

And last year, proud dad Michael Pinder joined us at Camp Challenge and read stories by the campfire with that famous voice of his!

A recent survey found that 59 percent of Americans plan to volunteer in 2010 – what a great resolution! Volunteering gives you an opportunity to change lives, including your own.

Since you are on the Me-One website, we assume that you have an interest in our cause. If that’s the case, we invite you to join our enthusiastic group of volunteers! The Me-One Foundation has events going on throughout the year: Our Basic Urban Kitchen Dinner in February, a “Run for the Me-One” (date to be determined) our Tee’d off at Cancer Golf Tournament in the fall and, of course, Camp Challenge in June. There are all sorts of ways to get involved. Me-One volunteers would tell you that there are people who pay thousands of dollars to try to achieve the same benefits that active volunteers get, most of which stem from the emotional happiness and internal well being that come from being part of something so much bigger than its parts. We’re not sure who gets more out of our Camp Challenge – the campers or the volunteers! All of us leave knowing that we connected with others and made a difference. Oh yeah, plus we have a great time! Happy New Year!

They recruit professional residential maid services who are insured and bonded to participate in their foundation by cleaning patients’ homes once a month for four months while they are in treatment. Their slogan is “One less thing to worry about”.

If you know a woman who is fighting cancer, please pass this information along and have her check out Cleaning for a Reason’s website at http://www.cleaningforareason.org

The sight offers these kind words, which mirror the thoughts of all of us at the Me-One Foundation:

“We hope that during this life crisis situation that you or your loved one fully recovers. We also hope that someday, an organization such as ours has no need to exist. But until then we will attempt to serve you the best way that we can.”

Many people, however, could probably do without another pair of socks, more fruitcake (yikes!) or useless gadgets, and kids are often inundated with clothes and toys from well meaning relatives. Every year millions of people receive gifts they don’t want and don’t need. This year, why not consider giving the best Christmas gift ever – a charity donation in the name of a loved one! Donations are a great way to celebrate the spirit of Christmas, help those in need, and show the people you care about just how important they really are. A gift donation is a fantastic present for a friend, family member or colleague, and something that really will last beyond Christmas day. A donation makes people feel good about themselves, they are tax deductible, and best of all – one size fits all!!!

The weekend after Thanksgiving, Sacramento was treated to two shows by the Trans Siberian Orchestra. For folks who have never been to a TSO show, the experience is hard to put into words. The guys describe their show as “the multi-dimensional art form of the rock opera.” That’s an understatement. Take spectacular lazers and lights, a full string section, out of this world vocals, and some of the most stunning, hardest rocking bass and guitar you will ever hear. Throw in some fire, and that begins to explain a TSO show.

The Trans Siberian Orchestra have become one of the world’s top touring acts, with a $20 million-plus production that by 2008 played to over 5 million people in 80+ cities, selling more than $230 million worth of tickets. ONE DOLLAR FROM EVERY ONE OF THOSE TICKETS IS DONATED TO A LOCAL CHARITY!!! In Sacramento, one of the two charities was….The Me-One Foundation! Me-One Founder/ President Heidi Wieser took the stage at the Arco Arena to receive a check for over $8,800. This is the third year that The Me-One Foundation has been the benefactor of TSO’s philanthropic generosity.

If you are looking for a terrific holiday gift, consider one of their CD’s! TSO has sold more than seven million copies of its first four rock operas — 1996’s CHRISTMAS EVE & OTHER STORIES, 1998’s THE CHRISTMAS ATTIC, BEETHOVEN’S LAST NIGHT in 2000 and 2004’s THE LOST CHRISTMAS EVE. Their official website is www.trans-siberian.com

Our sincere thanks to these generous, big hearted artists!
